Fun Facts About Food Near and Far

What's bouillabaisse? It's French for a fish stew that combines many kinds of fish and shellfish. Here is a stew of another kind — a variety of food facts.

Meal Within a Meal

For special occasions, the Bedouin tribes of Africa stuff a fish with eggs and put it inside a chicken. The chicken is put inside a sheep, and the sheep is put inside a camel and roasted. Now that's stuffed!

The Seven Wonders of the Modern WorldThe Seven Wonders of the Modern World

People have put together many lists of the seven ancient wonders of the world. But this “seven wonders” list celebrates monumental engineering and construction feats of the 20th century. It was chosen by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Finished in 1931, it towers 1,250 ft over New York City. Until the first tower of the World Trade Center was finished in 1972, it was the world's tallest building.

Accidental Food Inventions Great ideas that came from mistakes!

Do you ever feel bad because you made a mistake? Remember, some of our favorite foods were discovered by accident.

Popsicles
In 1905 an eleven-year-old Frank Epperson was mixing powdered soda and water to make soda pop. Frank accidentally left the mixing bucket outside. During the night the mixture froze solid, with the wooden stirring stick standing straight up. But the frozen pop tasted great! Frank started selling Epperson icicles for five cents, later changing the name to popsicles.

The Tree-House Restaurant

This Okinawa Tree-House restaurant, on Highway 58 at the entrance in Onoyama Park in the south of Japan. What may look like a genuine tree is actually a man-made concrete structure, just like the French used to build in the lathe 19th century. Customers actually have to get in an elevator inside the “trunk” to reach the restaurant. I have to say it’s a pretty original idea and the work on the tree is amazing, I couldn’t tell it was fake the first time I saw it.

Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) by Sigurdur H Stefnisson

Auroras (Polar Lights; or aurorae, sing.: aurora) are natural different colored light displays, which are usually observed in the night sky, particularly in the polar zone. Some scientists therefore call them "polar auroras" (or "aurorae polaris"). In northern latitudes, it is known as the aurora borealis, named after the Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for north wind, Boreas. It often appears as a greenish glow (or sometimes a faint red), as if the sun were rising from an unusual direction. The aurora borealis is also called the northern polar lights, as it is only visible in the North sky from the Northern Hemisphere. The aurora borealis most often occurs from September to October and from March to April.

The Baby-Jumping Festival In Colacho

We’re not joking, the Baby-jumping Colacho Festival is a real annual event celebrated all over Spain since the 1620s. It consists of grown men dressed as the Devil leaping over helpless babies. Why do they do this? They represent the devils that, when they jump, they take all the evil with them leaving the babies clean of evil. Here is a snapshot of one of the weirdest religious traditions

Art and Ghosts by Lousie

Welcome to the dream world of art and ghosts. An ethereal sphere that is charming and creepy all at the same time. These mysterious prints are made in Manchester, England by a woman named Louise who fancies a bit of fairy tale and mythology. She uses photoshop /wacom combo to meticulously handcolor each image.

She has this to say about her work:

“My images usually begin with a photograph, a painting or a doll portrait. I buy many dolls then sell them on for this reason alone (so fickle!), although i do possess a somewhat overbearing collection of plastic animals, doll house furniture and vintage frocks. My backgrounds are generally my own paintings or textures that I have created or photographed. Although most of my ‘completed’ work is digital, my sources are rather eclectic at best.”

Booby Traps of the Vietnam War

A booby trap is a device set up to be triggered by an unsuspecting victim. As the word trap implies, they often have some form of bait designed to lure the victim towards it. However, in other cases the device is triggered when the victim performs some type of everyday action e.g. opening a door, picking something up or switching something on. Lethal booby traps are often used in warfare, particularly guerilla warfare, and traps designed to cause injury or pain are also sometimes used by criminals wanting to protect drugs or other illicit property, and by some owners of legal property who wish to protect it from theft. Booby traps which merely cause discomfort or embarrassment are a popular form of practical joke.

Steven Meisel Photography

Steven Meisel (born 1954) is an American photographer, who obtained popular acclaim with his work in US and Italian Vogue and his photographs of friend Madonna in the latter's 1992 book Sex designed by Fabien Baron. He is now considered one of the most successful fashion photographers in the industry, shooting regularly for both US and Italian Vogue and lately W.

I thought it would be interesting to show some of his recent work, which is gorgeous, and some other art historical references with excessive pattern clashes that relates to that. Being an informed artist, Meisel was certainly knowledgeable of the work of painters Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele of the Austrian Secessionist movement at the turn of the 20th century. These painters, especially Klimt, explored fully this notion of the human figure entwined with and melting into the immediate surroundings. Schiele was knowledgeable of the older, more respected Klimt—and certain pieces of his work reflect that. Schiele’s life was tragic—persecuted by the law for “pornographic” drawings, he died at the young age of 28—a victim of the Spanish flu epidemic of Europe that took 20 million lives in 1918.

Certainly, Meisel knew of the incredible work of Verushka, basically the world’s first supermodel, and her camoflauge series, where she would use body paint to become (or blend into) wood, rocks or the landscape.

The Fastest Volvo you ever seen

Volvo is known as one of the safest cars in the world, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make them go fast too.

Spotted on the streets of Johor, Malaysia, this car has to be the fastest Volvo in the world. As you can see in the photos, it has no less than 10 exhausts, countless gauges showing God knows what information, and the stickers on the back warn anyone foolish enough to want to race it, that it has fuel injection and twin turbo.

Creative, Crazy and Funny Billboards

The billboard is one of the highly effective advertisement strategies. When driving along the road, highway, interstates, city center and the business district street, the billboard use quick-witted slogan and the eye-catching image receive driver’s attention.

In my opinion, this kind of advertisement is a tricky duty. The messages must be simple, effective and creative in order to attract driver attention in a second.

Here’s a big collection of interesting and creative billboard advertising.

Beautiful Icebergs

Nobody can understand magic of nature. Those people who go into detail to understand the nature they find more and more logic to understand more. One of great example as a beauty of nature is iceberg which takes years to form but it is just like magic. Most Part of iceberg is in water and rest is above water surface, it looks great.

They are formed when snow falls on the already icy land on the shores of the Antarctic continent. The snow never melts and eventually there is so much it begins to pack down and form ice. That ice eventually begins sliding into the sea - thus, an iceberg is born. Most icebergs display only 10% of their total mass above water while the other 90% remains beneath the surface. It takes hundreds and thousands of years for an iceberg to form to the sizes we usually see.

Surreal Mutation Body Art by Chooo-San

At first glance, these images might have you thinking that the artist is a photoshop master, but these incredible body-art illusions were made without the helping hand of a computer program. Japanese studentChooo-San transforms her limbs and face into surrealist artworks that look like body mutations from a sci-fi movie - though thankfully only using acrylics, meaning it can at least be rubbed off at the end of the day.

Chooo-san keeps a Tumblr where she shares photgraphs of her work, most of which are slightly disturbing modifications of her own face like adding an extra mouth or several extra eyes.

Igloo Hotel in Kakslauttanen, Finland

The Hotel Kakslauttanen in Finland is in fact an Igloo Village, at which you can have your pick of 20 unique glass and snow igloos for your stay. They aren’t ice houses, but 31 well-maintained log cabins – built from a very special thermo glass that keeps them warmth and comfortable. Because of that, the temperature inside the Igloos is always a normal room temperature and the igloos inhabitants won’t feel any of the polar cold.

Making of the 3D LEGO Chalk Drawing

Created for the Sarasota Chalk Festival in Florida, this amazing mashup of Legos and Terracotta warriors is magnificent in every sense of the word.

Founder and Director Peter Westerink told My Modern Met that it took a team of four artists - Leon Keer (design and art production), Peter Westerink (himself), Remko van Schaik, Ruben Poncia - five and a half days to complete it. "We started on Tuesday morning November 1st and finished on Sunday November 6th in the afternoon," Westerink says.

Some of the best street art has humor built into it. They are simple statements done very well.

Fish Spa in Turkey

Fish can help you to treat serious skin diseases. A special thermal spa in Turkey allows patients from all over the world swimming in the pool and letting the fish eat all infected parts of their skin. Fish “doctors” can help people to fight chronic, intractable diseases. Some people might find this treatment a bizarre method, but it’s very helpful!

Tokyo Tire Park

This playground, covered completely with sand, is filled with big tires in every combination: dinosaurs reaching to the sky, tire “monsters,” regular and tire swings, bridges, slides, climbing equipment, and loose tires lying everywhere for free play. Approximately 3,000 old tires are used to set up this playground. I wish there was a park like this in my neighborhood!

Truck Art of Pakistan

Just like the Billboard painting performed in Pakistan, there is another indigenous form of art performed in Pakistan and it is the Truck Painting. With its all colorful floral patterns, depiction of human heroes with creative aspect ratios, calligraphy of poetic verses and driver’s words of wisdom, this form of art is truly a part of Pakistani transport tradition.

This art is so Pakistani, that the freight trucks which are built by Ford, General Motors, Hino Pak etc in beautiful aerodynamic shapes are first retro-fitted with very Pakistani stlye bodies and a special ‘viewing deck’ at the top of Driver’s cab. The ‘viewing deck’ is a very multipurpose extra space. It is used by ‘cleaners’ to sleep at night and also to load extra luggage when needed.
